My Plan for District 58
Plank 233, section B of the Republican Party of Texas Platform states
“Texas House standing committees shall advance the conservative grassroots agenda, not that of special interests and lobbyists. The chairman and a majority of members of key committees shall support the conservative agenda. Standing Committees shall be chaired by the political party in majority.”
Are the conservative voters in Texas House District 58 (Johnson and Somerville Counties) okay that their state representative, through his allegiance to House Speaker Dade Phelan, supports Democrats being named to chair several important legislative committees, causing key conservative legislative priorities from being achieved? LET'S FIX IT!

Plank 101 of the Republican Party of Texas Platform states
“School Choice: Texas families shall be empowered to choose from public, private, charter, or homeschool options for their children’s education, and the funding shall follow the student without strings attached. We also support tax credits and exemptions for education and choice within the public school system.”
Are the conservative voters in Texas House District 58 (Johnson and Somerville Counties) okay that their state representative does NOT support your right to enroll your child in the school of your choice, bragging that by departing from the conservative principals of his party, he “Stopped a funding scheme that would take funding away from our local schools and divert it elsewhere”?
Does HE know better than you what’s in the best interest of YOUR children?
LET'S FIX IT!
Accountability
Republican party leaders are frustrated that their state representative for Texas House District 58 (Johnson and Somerville Counties) has time and again refused, or ignored invitations to come explain his reasoning for various votes and positions he has taken… votes and positions that run counter to the conservative beliefs of his constituents.
Is it just me, or do you also believe that our elected representatives should be accountable to those who elected them? LET'S FIX IT!

Let's Fix High Property Taxe$ and MUD Bond$
Texas property owners have for years been victimized by a system of taxation that is designed to raise revenue for various governmental entities… a system that is designed to favor the interests of the taxing entities at the expense of you and me… the people who are required to pay those taxes. In recent years, especially with the wild swings and fluctuations in property values, the various County Central Appraisal Districts, and the Chief Appraisers that those boards hire, have shown no empathy towards the every day citizens, many of whom struggle to pay their property taxes to avoid eviction. “There is nothing fair”, according to Lyndon Laird, Candidate for Texas House District 58 Representative, “about how the odds are stacked against Texas taxpayers… especially those in Johnson and Somervell Counties whose dream of home ownership is slipping further and further away”.
“Like most Texans,” Laird continued, “I was disappointed at how limited the scope of the “so-called” property tax reform was in the last legislative session. It was basically a small bandaid applied to a massive wound. If I had my way, Texas would do away with property taxes altogether in favor of alternative systems of raising revenue that are spread more equitably across the board, and have checks and balances in place to avoid the type of abuse that we see every day in our current Central Appraisal District system”. Lyndon Laird has made a successful career as a smart, aggressive attorney advocating for others… many times, successfully advocating for the “under dog”, for whom there seemed no hope for victory.
“I refuse to try to mislead voters,” says Laird, “by telling you that on my first day in Austin, I will go down and magically and single-handedly fix a flawed tax system that evolved over decades to the detriment of the taxpayers who foot the bill. What I WILL promise voters, is that from day one, my #1 priority will be to:

What I WILL promise voters, is that from day one, my #1 priority will be to:
Amend any/all statutes relating to how members of Central Appraisal District Boards ascend to those positions. Members of those boards are currently voted in by the taxing entities (i.e., cities, school districts, counties, etc.) for whom they raise revenue. That’s like an employee saying that he wants to choose his own boss, so he be be assured that he will get a sizable raise every year. These should be MUCH more separation here. Subsequently, I would push for members of CAD boards to be placed on those boards through election by the general population… in other words, the board would be answerable to the property taxpayers they are supposed to serve instead of the taxing entities that they do serve.
Amend any/all statutes relating to the method of compensation for all Chief County Appraisers. In no case should the compensation for any Chief County Appraiser be tied in any way to the amount, or a percentage of the amount of revenue brought in to the CADs or taxing entities… EVER! This motivation to turn in high (sometimes, exorbitantly high) appraisals on properties within the appraisers’ control opens the door to the appearance and possibility of personal enrichment. In the interests of Texas property taxpayers, this “status quo” must be changed.
Amend any/all statutes limiting the frequency of property tax appraisals to no more frequently than once every three years. Even though that option is available to CADs and Chief Appraisers now, Johnson County taxpayers are subjected to new (and higher) appraisals every year.”
To quote Cleburne Mayor, Scott Cain, “…these assessed values are killing the American dream of home ownership. They are blocking first time buyers, forcing retirees out of retirement, and renters can no longer afford rent. Taxes are higher than the mortgage for many property owners.”
“It will take a lot of hard work, to ignite the spark, but every movement has to have it’s beginning somewhere. I will build coalitions of support, and work hard to get these changes enacted in the next legislative session.” Lyndon Laird is willing to take up this fight on our behalf. These are the types of battles Lyndon has been trained to take on, and to win. Can Lyndon count on your support?
